Accurately codes diagnoses procedures and demographic information in the Health Information abstracting system. Codes clinical outpatient visits.

Requirements:

• Post secondary education in coding or equivalent experience (i.e. as in physician office).
• Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), CPC/CPC-H within 6 months of hire

Major Responsibilities:

1. Applies broad guidelines to specific coding situations; independently utilizing discretion and analytic ability.
2. Communicates effectively verbally and in writing.
3. Demonstrate proficiency in ICD-9-CM and CPT coding classification systems; diagnosis and procedure selection; and sequencing guidelines.
4. Demonstrated competence with Coding Guidelines.
5. Demonstrates knowledge of APC prospective payment systems.
6. Assist other Coders by monitoring Coders Mailbox for identification of accounts that need additional follow-up.
7. Assist other coders with resolving claims denied due to edits and updating the patient abstract from the ignored edit reports.
8. Performs audits as assigned by the Director of Medical Records.
